Highly effective communicators understand how important their engagement with other people is and what an impact it has on their ability to build strong relationships.

Communication is so much more than speaking.

Did you know that the majority of what is being said between people is non-verbal? It’s true. The bulk of communication isn’t verbal at all. Most of what we communicate with each other is conveyed by

• Our body language
• Our facial expressions
• The tone of our voice
• The gestures we use

This makes it important to consider not only what we say, but how we say it. People pick up on discrepancies between what we say and what we convey in other ways. Great communicators integrate the two seamlessly to build better relationships. They understand how important it is to be consistent with the entire message they are sending out.

When our communication style is healthy, we have the ability to be better leaders and better family members. We will also generally have more positive outcomes in all our interactions with others.

Unhealthy communicators tend to

• Create distrust or defensiveness
• Alienate people
• Fail to read non-verbal cues
• Cause strife rather than creating consensus

Though there may not be an intention to derail communication, a lack of self-awareness can prevent creating a meaningful connection. Learning new and better ways to communicate can help

• Build rapport
• Establish authority
• Create trust
• Develop empathy

Each of these characteristics leads to more fulfilling relationships and easier interactions with both business colleagues and friends and family.

What John shares in this video doesn’t just apply to people in the corporate world. If you are a parent, a teacher, a volunteer in a community organization, a doctor, a librarian, or really anyone, you can make a huge impact on those around you with just a few encouraging words. Here are a few tips to help you go for the good.

1. Stop focusing on yourself.
I’ve heard this called the belly-button mentality. We tend to get so worried about what we are doing or how others might perceive us that we tend to get stuck focusing on ourselves. Don’t be so concerned about what others think of you. Look up and around instead of down at your own belly-button. This way, you’ll start seeing more opportunities to encourage others.
2. Be authentic.
Don’t offer fake compliments or be a cheerleader. When looking for the good, mention something you genuinely like or appreciate even if it is something small. Then tell the person why you like it. This is a lot more meaningful than just being a cheerleader offering platitudes like, “You’re awesome!” Be specific with your compliments.
3. Do this for yourself.
Acknowledge the things you do well. We’ve probably all heard the admonition that we are not supposed to toot our own horn, but there is a difference between being boastful and simply acknowledging to yourself and others the value you bring to the table with your own unique skills, talents and perspective. This is not just healthy for you. Granting yourself permission to find good in yourself can help encourage others to do the same.
